The story of Papier d’Arménie® began in the 19th century when Auguste Ponsot, inspired by a traditional Armenian ritual of purifying homes with burning benzoin resin, brought the idea back to France.
Together with pharmacist Henri Rivier, he developed a fragrant blend of benzoin dissolved in alcohol, enriched with perfume and absorbed into blotting paper – slow-burning and flameless.
To this day, the iconic scented booklet is crafted by hand in Montrouge, France, in a family-run workshop. The process takes 6 months and includes 12 meticulous steps.
Mireille Schvartz, Rivier’s great-granddaughter, carries on the tradition with a passionate team – some of whom have been part of the Papier d’Arménie® family for three generations.
